Pastor
Phyllis Hormann was born in
Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii and her family roots in Hawaii began when
Pastor’s paternal grandfather came from Watertown, Wisconsin, where he
was a theologian teaching at college. In 1916 he had the opportunity to
become a pastor at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu. The first Lutheran
congregation in Hawaii was established in Kauai so he would frequently
make trips by boat to serve the congregation in Lihue, Kauai, as well.
After attending the University
of Hawaii for his bachelor’s and master’s degree, Pastor’s father went to
Chicago where he earned a Ph.D. in sociology. He met his wife in Chicago
and together they went back to Hawaii where he taught sociology at the
University. Our Pastor Horman is one of their five children, and has an
adopted brother seven weeks younger than she. Both of her parents are now
deceased. She and her younger brother are the equivalent of twins and are
very close.
Pastor Hormann attended the
University elementary school through ninth grade with the exception of
seventh grade when she went to a British school, King George V, in Hong
Kong. She completed her high school education by attending Punahou
Academy which was originally established as a school for missionary
children. From age ten through her college years she was involved in
competitive swimming and won many awards at various levels of competition.
University of Hawaii was the
next level of her pursuits for a degree in German.
From there she went to the University of Oregon for a Masters in
Recreation and Park Management. It was really therapeutic recreation.
She worked at a rehabilitation hospital for three years in Edmonton,
Alberta, and then returned to Hawaii where she worked for about three
years in nursing homes and the last four years with the Alzheimer’s
Association in Honolulu.
Various personal struggles and
vocational questions led Pastor back to her home congregation where she
became active in a variety of ways, helping with youth and serving on
intern support committees. Through one of these committee meetings her
curiosity about the pursuit of a theological career began. Thus Pacific
Lutheran Theological Seminary Berkeley, California, followed in 1991. She
graduated in 1995 and answered a call to St. Martin in Port Huron,
Michigan. This is a small struggling congregation which also houses the
Mid-City Nutrition Soup Kitchen which is well supported by the community.
She was there for eight and a half years. She was an Interim Associate
and later an Interim at Christ in Warren for three years. Christ is a
congregation close to 1,000 in membership. She was ordained at Peace
Lutheran Church in Southgate on April 8. 2007..
Pastor Hormann plans to remain
living in Sterling Heights while serving our congregation as an
intentional interim pastor. She enjoys anything outdoors specifically,
hiking, playing in the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii, and playing golf, which
she hopes to do more of this summer.
She has office hours Monday
through Thursday and is available by telephone and email. These are good
opportunities for you to share your background with her. She remembers
names better after a conversation or two. Don’t hesitate to repeat your
names to her. She is extremely easy to talk with and a willing listener.

Albert
LeBlanc, Jr,.
is a Seminarian attending
Ecumenical Theological Seminary (ETS) in Detroit. Albert previously was
enrolled in the SE Michigan Synod’s Lay Ministry program. During that
process, Albert decided to respond to God’s call and formally enter
seminary. Currently, Albert assists the pastor in various ways as part
of his theological education including preaching, teaching and
visitation.
Outside of Peace, Albert works full-time as the
Learning and Performance Manager for a book printer in Saline. In his
role, he focuses on training and development, quality management systems
and monitors and analyzes performance issues (both human performance and
process performance).
Albert and his wife, Angela (Fuchs), were married at Peace Lutheran on
September 28, 1996. Since then, they have been blessed with two beautiful
children (Emilee in 1999 and Jakob in 2005)
Albert believes in the basics – Faith, Hope and Love. His FAITH is
strengthened by prayer; his HOPE grows when reading the promises stated in
scripture; and he is reminded of LOVE each time he looks at the cross.
Albert views himself as being an instrument of the Lord; often as a “Sower
of Seed”. He feels that, as Christians, our job is to plant the seeds of
Faith, Hope and Love then allow the Holy Spirit to nourish that seed and
allow it to grow. He feels called to make sure we remain focused on the
basics so that we can welcome all to Christ. Albert states, “As a
community of believers, we are commissioned through our baptism to
minister to ALL; to care for ALL; to pray for ALL.”
Bonnie Schippling, Choir Director
Bonnie Schippling serves as choir director
for both the Senior and Children's choirs at Peace. Bonnie is currently
a junior at Wayne State University in Detroit, studying vocal music

Concert Chorale.
Her professional highlights include performing at the 2004 Democratic
Inaugural Ball at the Smithsonian Institute, performing at Greenfield
Village's Holiday Nights and releasing a Christian album.
In her own words, Bonnie is an "eager musician hoping to bring passion
of music to a young heart and renew joy of music to a mature heart,
giving back to God the gift he has given".
